Chock full of fabulous food, fashion and kid-friendly activities, Melbourne is a fun destination at any time of year, but autumn is particularly lovely.
Although it is a bit sad to say goodbye to the hot weather, Melbourne does gorgeously crisp clear autumns so well. And a change of season means lots of new goodies in the shops. Less pastels and cool cottons. More jewel tones and luscious textures.
What to wear in Melbourne in autumn depends very much upon when in autumn you will be visiting, as the maximum temperature drops dramatically as you move from March to April and into May.
In March the daytime temperature starts off at a relatively toasty 24˚c average, before dropping to 20˚c in April and finally 16˚c in May. Brrr! Chilly!
In comparison, Sydney is generally around 4˚c warmer throughout autumn, with the difference being particularly noticeable overnight (Melbourne 10˚c, Sydney 15˚c) and in the mornings (Melbourne 14˚c, Sydney 18˚c).

What to wear in Melbourne in autumn
You can’t go past a long-sleeved dress in autumn. A wee bit warmer than shorter or no sleeves, yet with the flexibility to either leave your legs bare with socks or add some tights.
A stretchy dress is always a comfortable option (Boden dress below) and an all over print adds plenty of personality (H&M dress below).

Ankle boots are perfect for cool autumn weather as they work well with socks and tights, especially when wearing a dress.
Keep your toes warm with a simple pale grey boot (Country Road boots above), a knee high tan boot or stomp around with buckles and fur (Wittner boots below).

Those cool Melbourne autumn mornings will need an extra layer of warmth, especially if you’re heading out early. Luckily there are some fabulous jackets in the shops.
Military is still a big look this year (Boden jacket above), there’s quite a lot of soft pinks (Sussan jacket above) and black and white checks around, and of course navy is always a classic (Sussan jacket below).
