Last night we went to DISNEY ON ICE! Did I just shout that? Ooops! Sorry! We were just a little bit excited. I adore all things Disney, hence our Disney Extravaganza trip later this year, and mix that up with some ice skating and death-defying stunts and I’m totally there.
Rapunzel was the star this year and, being an adventurous sort, she made Disney On Ice – Dare To Dream a sensational show. Disney On Ice comes to Australia at this time every year, but each show is completely different. We went to one a couple of years ago with Ariel as the focus, and the way they managed to create an underwater scene with bubbles suspended in the air was incredible.
The joyous atmosphere that surrounds a Disney On Ice show is wonderful. The show’s creators truly manage to capture that Disney magic, sprinkle it on the ice and draw you into its enchanting world. Just look at these excited faces!
Disney On Ice review
Pre-show
I suggest deciding on your merchandise policy before you arrive. Prices start from around $20 for a program or balloon. There’s popcorn and shaved ice in elaborate containers, wands, swords, clothes, dolls. Anything and everything. So go crazy or buy nothing. Whatever floats your boat. But be prepared! Because you know the kids will want everything.
Mickey & Minnie
Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald opened the show and for us they really set the scene. This is the Disney that we know and love. Although the kids loved all the princesses, I was a little bit disappointed that there weren’t more characters throughout the show. But there were a lot of little girls in the audience so I guess the princess theme is perfectly targeted to them.
I have no idea how the characters manage to skate with some of the big costumes they wear!
Snow White
Heigh ho! Heigh ho! It’s off to work we go! How old is that tune? Such a classic. And surprisingly the kids also named this as one of their absolute highlights. Just goes to show, it’s not all about the princesses.
Cinderella
Speaking of princesses though, when Cinderella arrives on stage in her carriage to “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”, my heart stopped a little. A beautiful song with such a lovely sentiment, all glittering and sparkly.
Tangled
This was super impressive. It’s one thing swinging about the place without wires, only your strength to hold you up, but doing it with skates on? I would be terrified of slashing my partner as we twirled and posed!
Finale
I love that all the princesses got a shot towards the end. So lovely to have each couple skate to their theme music. I’m a huge Belle fan, so to hear that Beauty and the Beast music and see her and her prince was a high point for me. The girls are fluent in princess and knowingly explained which was which to me. Not so easy to do when they were all wearing gold and white costumes! Thank goodness for the theme music and Ariel’s red hair, otherwise I would have been completely lost!
The lanterns were breath-taking. Such a beautiful touch in both the Tangled section and the finale. It is so impressive the effects that the designers can create with only a few pieces of scenery. So clever.
I’m a complete sucker for fireworks. They really add the wow factor don’t you think? And make a completely awesome finale!
And just when you think it’s all over and you’re feeling a little bit sad, fear not! Check out these awesome women! They are just members of the audience who really really like Disney, but to the kids they were superstars!! As far as the kids were concerned they were the real deal and had just come off the ice. Even at 7 years old they truly thought they had just met Rapunzel, Snow White and Cinderella! Fabulous! And why not? Why can’t we all be a Disney princess? I want to dress up next time!
Tickets
There’s still 5 shows left in Sydney over this weekend, with all the times and ticket prices available on the Ticketek website. Or click on the pic.
If you’re looking at the seating chart, we were in Section 4, row E. The photos and videos probably give a distorted representation of our view, because the photos make it look closer and the video looks much further away. But I was really impressed with our seats. I think having a bit of elevation means you can see what’s happening everywhere rather than just what’s in front of you and, although the kids had fun using the binoculars, they felt like they had a fantastic view without them.
We are so grateful to Disney On Ice for very kindly gifting us our tickets.
